Hello, world!
I'm Cranky, from Changsha, China.
Yes, Cranky is really the English name I use. I found the word in an English magazine when I was in high school — it was used to describe Squidward Tentacles from SpongeBob SquarePants. I thought it was funny, adopted it as my name, and somehow I've kept using it for nearly two decades. At this point, it's probably too late to change it. :)
I'm a mother to a lovely four-year-old girl, and I also live with a six-year-old cat who occasionally behaves as if he owns the house.
I love journaling, stationery, sewing and making little things by hand. I also enjoy coffee, movies, clothes, travelling, and collecting beautiful or strange little objects that make everyday life more interesting. I have a habit of turning ordinary things into tiny projects — sometimes they work, and sometimes they become another unfinished hobby.
What I love about postcards is that they are ridiculously slow. A card can spend weeks — or even months — travelling across the world before suddenly appearing in someone's mailbox. In an age when a message can arrive in one second, I think there is something wonderfully romantic about that.
Please write something on your card!
You don't need to tell me anything grand or introduce your whole country. I actually love hearing small and ordinary things about people's lives. Tell me what you ate today, what the weather looks like outside your window, something ridiculous your pet did, a local food you think everyone should try, what you've been obsessed with lately, or simply a tiny thing that made you happy today.
Random thoughts, silly stories, complaints about your day, little secrets and terrible jokes are all welcome. I love receiving these tiny pieces of someone else's real life.
And if you still don't know what to write, I have a little project for you.
A few years ago, I had an idea: I wanted to collect kind wishes for my daughter from people around the world through postcards. So far, she has received only one from overseas, so this little collection is still very, very small. :)
If you'd like, please write a short wish for her. You can write it in English or in your own language — a translation would be wonderful! I would love to save these messages for her as she grows up.
I think she would be very happy to know that someone somewhere far away once sent her a little kindness. And honestly, it would make her mom very happy too.
About postcards:
I don't have a strict wishlist. Food, illustrations, local culture, art, animals, unusual designs, something funny, something very "you" — surprise me! If you chose the card because you liked it, that's already a good reason to send it.
Beautiful or interesting advertising cards are welcome too! I actually collect some ad cards myself, especially illustrated ones with lovely artwork or creative designs. I don't mind that a card comes from a brand, shop, café, museum or event, as long as it feels more like a piece of art than an advertisement.
I also have a rather large collection of unused postcards waiting for their chance to travel, so you may be helping me with an important mission: setting them free. :)
One small confession: I'm not very good at English. So if I don't understand something you write, your postcard may be respectfully handed over to my private assistant, Mr. G, for translation. He takes this position very seriously. (At least that's what he claims.)
I'm also learning Japanese, so if you speak Japanese, please feel free to write to me in Japanese. I'll do my best to read it — and if I fail, well... Mr. G may have to work overtime again.
I'm happy to receive postcards and letters in other languages too. You can write a short sentence in your own language and tell me what it means. I think that would be lovely.
I used to exchange postcards mostly within China, and after being away from Postcrossing for quite a while, I'm finally back. I still find it a little magical that a piece of paper written by someone I've never met can cross oceans and eventually end up in my hands.
So, wherever you are:
Hello from Changsha. I'm looking forward to meeting a tiny piece of your world. :)
